Why walk when you can ride?
Boating at Vasona Lake
Neil Wiley

You don’t need your own boat to get out on the water. You can rent a pedal boat, kayak, stand-up paddle board, or sailboat at Vasona throughout the fall, depending on the weather and water level. The water is calm, the scenery is beautiful, and it’s an easy way to get into boating. No experience is necessary, except you may need a lesson or two in sailing.

Pedal boats are easy to drive. You can bring another adult, or add one or two small children. I used a pedal boat as a stable shooting platform for photography. Cost is $15 an hour, and $10 for a half-hour.

Kayaks take a little more practice, but this calm, little lake is a good place to learn. Two-person and one-person kayaks are available for $15 an hour, and $10 for a half hour.
If you are a bit braver, or want to try something different, a stand-up paddle board is fun. It’s also $15 an hour, and $10 a half-hour, but if you would like a half-hour lesson and half-hour boat rental, it’s yours for $25
If you know how to sail, you can skipper two of you for $20, or four for $25. If you want a third-party skipper, add $15 an hour.

Sign up at the boating dock any day. Weekday hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last boat out at 4:30 p.m. Weekend hours start at the same time but run one hour later. Lessons are available.

Rentals are managed by Los Gatos Saratoga Recreation, but don’t call for reservations. For information, call the boathouse at 408-399-5260. Vasona Lake Park is located on Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos, on the north side of Highway 17.
